As Venice was surrounded by the sea, early Venetians took advantage of salt production. Soon Venice was able to monopolize the salt trade in the region.
The early Venetian boatmen traded salt and fish for grain with other communities along the Po River. Through establishing trade agreements with different communities living by the river, they dominated the region around the river mouth and its surrounding mainland.
With this accessibility, Venice was able to obtain its source of wood for trading and shipbuilding. Wood was also traded with Middle-eastern states in return for valuable goods such as gold, spices and incense.

Thus, the salt trade indirectly helped Venice forge trade partner ships and establish trade agreements. By gaining access to the mainland and its forested areas, it was able to widen the range of items it traded. It can also sell its products to larger markets, helping it generate more revenue. As time went by, Venice began to exert a strong commercial influence in the Adriatic Sea region and became recognized as the rising trade power in the 7th century. From the profits it earned from trading, Venice was able to expand its navy and construct better naval ships. This led to its rise a maritime empire.
